Education Not Indoctrination

Everyone wants our students and staff to be inclusive and accepting of all students, families and staff. Everyone wants accurate history taught to students. Education becomes indoctrination when all history is viewed through the narrow lens of racism. Historic racism must not be taught in the absence of victories our country has made over racism. Social Studies, English and History classes must not be taught with a bias toward, or against, any religious, political or cultural point of view.

Responsible Financial Decisions

Residents within the district have good reason to be proud of Kings schools. We have excellent schools, dedicated teachers and well-rounded course offerings to students at every level. While continued excellence in our schools is non-negotiable, cost saving opportunities must be more seriously pursued before any levy is presented to the taxpayers.

Real Transparency

It appears at times that decisions are made before the board meets in public and, most of the time, the board votes unanimously. People around my dinner table don’t agree that often! Discussions that impact Kings students, staff and taxpayers must be held in public forum, where diversity of thought is welcomed, seriously considered, and built upon, as decisions are made during discussions that are held within your hearing.

I am deeply concerned about the teaching of CRT in our Kings School District. What is troubling is how that teaching would occur in our schools. With the political influences, it has the possibility of implementation of the extreme CRT components which views members of society through the lens of the “oppressed” vs. “the oppressor”, with the “oppressed” population being comprised of “disadvantaged” minorities, and the “oppressors” being the “privileged” white people. I believe that the inclusion of CRT in the classroom will only result in dividing our children and our community. 

Responsible Financial Decisions

The current budgets for Kings need to work towards a balanced budget each year. There currently is a budget surplus and existing budgets appear to be increasing to use up that surplus. While it is understood options would be provided for cost cutting measures, it appears there is no open discussion on initiatives to properly check the growing of costs.  We should be more diligent on budgeting to be zero-based, while maintaining our superior Kings School District reputation. 

Real Transparency

My short experience in Kings has identified there is much more we can do to involve the community. Our community is the backbone and the voice of where the School Board Members should act. I value input from the community and will incorporate the community’s thoughts and concerns as I serve you on the Kings Board of Education.

Education Not Indoctrination

Critical Race Theory (CRT) has no place in any Kings schools. It is time for the conservative majority to make a stand and elect school board members and public officials who have similar values and beliefs. Our history can be taught without the hatred and diverseness that is part of CRT. 

Responsible Financial Decisions

Running a school district requires board members to make difficult financial decisions which are not always asking for more revenue from taxpayers. Sometimes the solution involves sharpening the pencil and finding creative and innovative ways to reduce expenses. Budgeting a deficit should be the last course of action and not the normal.

Real Transparency

The current board has allowed the administration to provide misleading and sometimes false information in recent bond levy campaigns without any known consequences. In order for the board and administration to regain the trust of the community this must be stopped immediately. The school board needs to be available to the community and publicly explain its actions.

• In response to the anticipated need for more space in our schools, the school board developed a plan that demolished high quality, well maintained buildings that are not near their end of intended use.  They asked the voters to approve a $90M levy, twice, to fund this irresponsible plan.  The voters rejected this plan, once in 2019 and once in 2020.  The board did not develop an alternative plan in 2020 or 2021.

• Earlier this year, the superintendent recommended continuing the bus schedule that was used for the 2020-2021 school year, with one slight change that would put all K-4 schools on the same schedule.  Columbia Intermediate School (grades 5-6) would be the only school with a unique time schedule.  His rationale was half the community wanted to keep the same schedule, and doing so would save the district nearly $600,000/year. The board rejected that recommendation, and chose to spend nearly $600,000/year to have Columbia on the same bell schedule as the three K-4 schools rather than starting and stopping 1 hour later.

• We will review every budget item, to ensure your tax dollars are spent in a responsible manner, while maintaining the high standard of educational excellence Kings families deserve and expect to receive.

• Approximately 68% of your real estate taxes go to Kings schools and only approximately 25% of Kings residents have a student attending a Kings school.  Financial decisions need to be made that benefit the entire Kings community.

• If a new levy is needed, we will hold community meetings where we can share available options and receive input from the community before we put a levy on the ballot.  While everyone will not be pleased with any levy, in any school district, ever, we will do our best to only ask for what is needed, and to be meticulously transparent about why it is needed.

• Have you ever seen the board lean toward one decision in a work session, and then a week later make the opposite decision, with no discussion, in the regular meeting?

• We will not discuss school board decisions without giving you the opportunity to hear the discussion.

• If we have the need to hire a superintendent we will commit to a specific hiring process.  That process will be shared with the community, and that process will be followed.
